Bellagio is beautiful all year round and there are advantages in every season.

SPRING is when the famous gardens begin to blossom and come into their own. Villa Melzi in Bellagio has beautiful azaleas and Villa Carlotta has an ealry display of camelias. Visitors come to see the gardens between March and May when they are at their most colourful. The ferry service for the central lake becomes more frequent from the third week of March. There can be beautfiul sunny days in spring but early mornings and evenings will be cooler.

Summer is naturally the warmest time of year and there can be spectacular but short storms in the evening. You may need to cool off in the water at the lakeside beach or at the Sporting Club pool in Bellagio. This is the busiest season and it is wonderful to unwind with the locals in your village, Visgnola, after a day on the lake. There are festivals throughout the summer in various places and the biggest is on 24 June when fireworks are let off all along the lake in celebration of St John, the patron saint.

AUTUMN can still be very pleasant for weather. There may be more rain or even early snow on the mountains. This is a wonderful time to tke walks in the hills or to cycle. Behind the apartment the peninsular rises with wonderful well-marked hiking trails. You will find all the trail maps in the apartment. Maybe you'll collect some chestnuts too. Bellagio begins to slip into being 'just the locals' again after a busy summer season. Visit now and you will feel like a local. Go to mountain restaurants and eat the local fare like polenta. This would also be a good time to visit Milan and its museums.

WINTER is attracting more visitors these days. On bright sunny winter days (and there are plenty) you can enjoy the mountain walks and wonderful light for photography. Capture the lake out of season for something special. General food shops and the locals' pizzerias and restaurants are open all year round but other boutiques and restaurants will open at weekends to cater in particular for visitors from Milan who head to Bellagio to do a little shopping and have a good lunch. The reason Bellagio is famous for its gardens and vegetation is because of its microclimate. It is protected by the high mountains from weather which affects the plains further to the south. Wrap up for the colder temperatures but put the walking boots on. You can also ski close to Bellagio. The locals celebrate Christmas and New Year and Como has a Christmas market. Restaurants have special menus for the occasions.
